Romantic and passionate love is mostly a cultural phenomenon that has been constructed over centuries of civilization and has become a subject of universal fascination. Love is a magnetic topic to investigate in a Humanities classroom as it addresses a web of other related issues and calls in numerous disciplines such as psychology, psychoanalysis, history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, literature, fine arts, music, and hard science such as biology and medicine. This course will focus mainly on the unmatched contribution by French culture to the shaping of love throughout the Western world, as French have “invented” love according to American scholar Marylin Yalom (2012), but it will also explore love in many other cultures including the USA, the Middle East and Asia. Students will discover the most famous love stories of all times that have inspired literary masterpieces and fairy tales as well as art works, musicians, and filmmakers. They will also get a better understanding of how this powerful feeling contributed to enduring myths that permeate contemporary culture and became among the greatest seminal ideas of the world. Past students wrote this on this class in their evaluation: "The most amazing course I've ever taken in my life," "a mind-altering experience," "captivating," "Surveys love throughout 2000 years," "truly exceptional," "a most memorable experience," "I'd take it again!," "by far the best course I have taken during my entire college experience," "moving", "engaging," "enriching," "crucial," "helped me understand other materials in my other classes," "I applied every lesson to my real life," "phenomenal," "It changed my life."
