The course provides an overview of the most significant developments in Maghrebi cinema, from its earliest productions in the 1960s to contemporary landmark films. It introduces students to the evolution of Maghrebi cinema by examining key moments in the development of the film industries of Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria, as well as the impact these films have had on both national and international audiences. Throughout the semester, students will explore a diverse range of film genres, including social realism, epic cinema, comedy, documentary, film noir, docu-fiction, and thrillers. The course will examine films produced over four decades by different generations of male and female directors. Particular attention will be given to identifying and distinguishing the genres, styles, and themes of Maghrebi cinema, while considering how filmmakers have addressed social, historical, and political issues within both past and contemporary Maghrebi contexts.
