This course offers an overview of the topic of serial homicide. From etiology of offending to victims and survivors, this course examines the research and testimonies associated with serial homicide. Students will gain a grounded understanding of how academics have approached the study of serial killers, mass murderers, and spree killers, predominantly within the US. Students will be exposed to how the media has reacted to and portrayed serial killers. The evolution of the study of serial homicide and the social construction of serial murder will be analyzed.

The study of missing persons cases, how missing persons cases are investigated, the role of the news (both social and traditional), and the factors that affect case solvability. Furthermore, students will be exposed to the complex nature of the relationship between media attention, case characteristics, and finding the missing. The evolution of the study of missing persons cases in the US and beyond, along with the social construction of missingness will also be examined.
