Capstone course. Students gain experience in a newsroom environment, producing and editing content for a local/regional wire news service for Acadiana. Students will rotate in reporting, editing, multimedia, social media, and production roles throughout the semester, covering local public affairs issues for online publication. Students will finish the course with an online portfolio summarizing their college journalism career as they prepare to enter the workforce.

Extensive practice writing in AP style for publics and mass media, including production and refinement of portfolio projects for prospective employers. The course aims to build on the concepts learned in CMCN 212 and CMCN 321 by presenting “real-world” assignments that challenge students to employ the basics of clear, concise writing for a variety of business communication applications with an emphasis on the role of the public relations professional. Students will learn to effectively apply the writing process to forms of public relations writing such as: news releases, feature stories, fact sheets, blogs, pitch letters, memoranda, advertising and advertorials, newsletters, brochures, social media writings and proposals.

Introduction to the social, legal, and ethical issues of computing, including the professional code of ethics. Topics include how computer use affects society, communities, individuals, and work, at both local and global scales, in the contexts of risk, privacy, computer crime, intellectual property, and professional decision-making, taking into account legal, ethical, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility principles to inform development of inclusive and accessible computing solutions that address the needs of diverse user communities. Students analyze scenarios that allow them to view ethical decision-making as a crucial part of understanding the world, computing, and their diverse interplay. Oral presentation and written reports are required.
