This course investigates economic and ecological dynamics in the international arena, involving distinct political communities (i.e. nation-states) or other human groups (e.g. corporations, lobby groups, militias, etc.). Ecology is the study of living systems in interaction with physical resources; economics is the study of human activities organized around money; and the concept of “sustainability” in the former is analogous to the concept of “budget” in the latter. We will learn how these two fields overlap and how they affect the global distribution of power.

This course is an introduction to how race and gender interact with and shape politics around the world, relying on multiple critical approaches to politics that are relevant to the modern world. This course will emphasize a number of perspectives, including those of Black folks, Post-colonial scholars, Black feminists, Indigenous scholars, and other historically excluded peoples. We will also examine relationships with subjects such as political behavior, colonialism, incarceration, development, justice, human rights, and environmental concerns. Despite this diverse list of topics, not every possible facet of race, gender, and politics can be covered in a single semester. However, through our discussions, analyses, and syntheses, a central goal will be to help students understand broader political situations through the frameworks we examine.

The year 1922 saw the publication of two landmark literary works: James Joyce's Ulysses and T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. While the two publications caused a stir, other noteworthy creative works came to light that year, as well, with artists and writers attempting to address the Great War, the 1918 pandemic, and, at least, in the U.S., racial inequality.
Now, a hundred years later, this class will treat 1922 as a Time Capsule of literary and artistic achievement and struggle. We’ll read texts, consider Modernist paintings, listen to Jazz tunes, and view a famous “silent” film--all from the year 1922.

Our Mission Possible is to explore engaging new apps for learning provided by the Microsoft Office 365 suite of apps. Over the past several semesters, we have learned much about engaging our digital native students, but we need to continue to increase our pedagogical toolkit. These exciting apps for learning engage students both inside and outside of the classroom in multi-faceted ways. Through our work together, we will use an inquiry model to experiment with various apps, including FlipGrid, NearPod, and other Office 365 apps of our choosing. Through our experiences and support of each other, our goal will be to grow in our pedagogical knowledge to choose and apply technology to increase student engagement and success. Mission Possible will meet monthly or more as a whole group, but will also work in smaller partner groups as a way to give feedback and support our learning. Your Mission Possible is to accept this challenge and join an engaging and enjoyable community of tech explorers.
